49ers-Chargers Preseason Finale: Who Actually Cares About Winning This Thing?

The 49ers roll into SoFi Stadium for what's essentially a glorified dress rehearsal before both teams start worrying about games that actually matter. Preseason Week 3 used to be the starters' showcase, but in 2026, most coaches treat it like a bubble-player audition and a chance to avoid catastrophic injuries.

San Francisco's depth chart battles are the real storyline here—Kyle Shanahan's got roster decisions to finalize at running back and along the defensive line, so expect plenty of second and third-stringers getting extended run. The Chargers are in similar evaluation mode, particularly in their secondary where competition remains fierce for the final cornerback spots.

Neither coaching staff will show much schematically. You'll see vanilla coverages, basic run concepts, and exactly zero exotic blitz packages worth studying. The first quarter might feature some semblance of regular-season intensity before both sidelines start rotating bodies like a hockey line change.

Betting this game is basically lighting money on fire unless you've got insider info on which backups are desperate to make an impression. The over/under will hinge entirely on whether the fourth-stringers can move the ball against other fourth-stringers in garbage time. DarkHorse hasn't bothered publishing a pick yet, which tells you everything about how seriously we're taking this exhibition. Save your bankroll for Week 1.
