Brewers and Dodgers Separate From the Pack—But Watch That Cubs Offense

The Brewers sit atop the league at 69-42, and the numbers back up every win. Milwaukee's +1.2 net rating leads a top-heavy tier that includes the Dodgers (+1.3) and Braves (+1.0), but here's the kicker: the Brewers are doing it with elite balance. That 5.0 offensive rating paired with a 3.8 defensive mark is the formula for October success. The Dodgers match that defensive excellence while posting a league-best 5.1 on offense, making them the slight analytical favorite despite trailing by half a game in the standings.
Atlanta remains the class of the National League East at 67-45, though their +1.0 net rating suggests they're a step behind the top two. The Braves are good—very good—but not dominant. Meanwhile, the Rays at 65-46 look like the most overrated contender in baseball. That +0.3 net rating screams regression, and their 4.4 offensive rating is pedestrian for a team with 65 wins. Tampa's pitching (4.1 defensive rating) is keeping them afloat, but this isn't a juggernaut.
Here's your sleeper: the Cubs. Chicago's 63-49 record undersells a team with a +0.8 net rating and that same elite 5.1 offensive output the Dodgers are flaunting. The pitching is shaky at 4.3, sure, but the Cubs are mashing their way into contention. Don't sleep on them in a wide-open National League.
On the flip side, the Tigers at 54-58 are the league's most interesting underachiever. That +0.6 net rating with a stingy 4.0 defensive mark says they should be above .500. Detroit's problem? A middling 4.5 offense that can't capitalize on quality pitching. If they get hot at the plate, they're dangerous.
The bottom is exactly what you'd expect: the Athletics and Rockies both allowing 5.7 runs per game with no path forward. Fade them with confidence.
