The Phillies squeaked past the Cardinals 7-6 in a back-and-forth affair at Citizens Bank Park that had all the drama of a playoff atmosphere but none of the October stakes. Philadelphia's offense did just enough to hold off a scrappy St. Louis squad that refused to go quietly into the night.

This one had lead changes, clutch hitting, and enough bullpen chaos to give both managers fresh gray hairs. The Cardinals showed they can hang with anyone when the bats wake up, but six runs means nothing when you surrender seven. St. Louis pitching leaked runs at inopportune moments, and the Phillies capitalized when it mattered most.

Philadelphia's lineup ground out timely knocks to build cushion, then watched their relievers nearly cough it all back up in the late innings. Credit to the Cardinals for battling—down one run, they had their chances but couldn't deliver the knockout punch. Baseball's a game of inches, and tonight those inches belonged to the home squad.

We didn't have a pick on this one, so no victory lap or mea culpa required. Just two teams trading haymakers until the final out. The Phillies walk away with the W, the Cardinals head to the airport frustrated, and we move on to the next card.
