Well, that was humbling. We backed Chase Burns and his elite 2.51 ERA against Carson Whisenhunt's batting-practice 7.03 mark, and the baseball gods laughed directly in our faces. The Giants blanked Cincinnati 5-0 at Oracle Park, turning our "decisive pitching mismatch" into a punchline.

Whisenhunt, who we essentially called a tomato can, suddenly remembered how to locate a fastball and kept the Reds scoreless. Meanwhile Burns—the supposed ace in our pocket—either had an off night or the Giants simply had his number. The final score doesn't lie: San Francisco plated five runs while Cincinnati's bats went catatonic, managing exactly zero trips across the plate.

This is why they play the games instead of simulating them in spreadsheets. On paper, Burns versus Whisenhunt looked like men against boys. In reality, the Reds' inconsistent offense (3.73 R/G over their last 15) showed up in its worst form, and Whisenhunt defied his season-long incompetence for one glorious afternoon.

The market moved our direction pre-game, climbing from -130 to -170 on the Reds. Turns out the sharps got trapped right alongside us. Sometimes the underdog just punches you square in the mouth. Credit to San Francisco—they made us look silly.
