Astros Look to Sweep Oakland's Skeleton Crew, But the Number Says Pump the Brakes

Houston took last night's opener 7-5, cashing our Astros moneyline ticket, and now they send Hunter Brown—a legitimate ace with a 3.26 ERA and double-digit strikeout rate—against an Oakland lineup that's been gutted by injuries. No Rooker. No Soderstrom. No Wilson or Muncy. The A's are trotting out Jacob Lopez and his 5.68 ERA like a sacrificial lamb, and you'd think this is a layup for the Astros to roll by multiple runs.

Except Houston's offense has been absolutely pedestrian lately, averaging just 4.0 runs per game over their last fifteen. Beyond Yordan Alvarez and his 1.03 OPS monster season, this lineup is a parade of sub-.710 OPS bats—Altuve, Walker, Allen, Smith, Trammell all scuffling. That's not a recipe for blowouts, even against lesser competition.

The A's are 6-3 at home and scoring over five per game in Oakland, where they've shown some bite. Last night's game stayed within two runs until late, and that's the pattern here: Houston wins, but not comfortably. Laying -1.5 with this anemic supporting cast feels greedy. We're riding Athletics +1.5 at -115 with moderate confidence—Brown keeps it close, but getting nearly two runs of cushion with a home dog is the sharper side when the favorite can't consistently blow doors off.
