Marlins Flip Script on Luzardo, Hand Phillies Third Straight Loss

The Marlins completed a three-game sweep with an 8-6 victory over Philadelphia, making our Phillies -176 pick look foolish in the process. So much for that 1.19 ERA advantage.

Jesús Luzardo, who we backed based on his sparkling 3.31 ERA and dominant strikeout numbers, got absolutely shelled. The Marlins tagged him for six runs before he could escape the fifth inning, turning our "clear starting pitcher value" into expensive confetti. Miami's offense, supposedly the inferior unit with that .295 OBP, didn't get the memo about being overmatched. They jumped on Luzardo early and never looked back.

Ryan Gusto wasn't exactly vintage Maddux himself, but he didn't need to be. The Marlins' bats did the heavy lifting, and their bullpen held serve late despite Philadelphia's two-run rally that made the final score slightly more respectable than the game actually was. The Phillies managed six runs but spent most of the night playing catch-up baseball—never a winning formula.

This sweep stings. We laid premium juice on superior pitching metrics and got torched by a Marlins team playing with house money at home. Sometimes the numbers lie, sometimes variance wins. Tonight was both. The Fish earned this one, and we're stuck eating a -176 loss that hurts exactly as much as the price tag suggests.
