FC Dallas Squanders Lead, Settles for Road Draw in Portland

FC Dallas had the superior side on paper and on the pitch for long stretches, yet somehow couldn't close the deal in a frustrating 2-2 draw at Providence Park. Our ML pick? Dead in the water, and it stings because Dallas did almost everything right except finish the job.

The visitors looked every bit the fourth-place squad their metrics suggested, controlling possession and creating quality chances against a Portland side that's leaked goals all season. Dallas built a lead doing exactly what they do best—clinical finishing backed by that elite xG profile we highlighted. For 70-odd minutes, this looked like the comfortable road result their 2.0 goals-per-game form promised.

Then the wheels wobbled. Portland, desperate and dangerous at home despite their 13th-place standing, clawed back to level terms. Credit where due: the Timbers showed the kind of late-game grit that keeps you in playoff conversations, even when the underlying numbers say you shouldn't be there.

Dallas's failure to see this out is precisely why they're fourth and not first. The quality gap was real—they proved that much—but championship sides don't surrender leads to inferior opponents on the road. One point beats zero, but this feels like two dropped for a team that should be making statements in October.
