Thunder-Rockets Preseason: Expect a Slog, Not a Shootout

Oklahoma City and Houston both closed last season as top-tier defenses—107.9 and 110.0 points allowed, respectively—while running elite offenses north of 115 efficiency. On paper, that's a recipe for a 230-point track meet. In reality? This is October 15th exhibition basketball, and half the rotation is either resting or nursing phantom ailments.

The Rockets have Kevin Durant, Alperen Sengun, Fred VanVleet, and Steven Adams all listed day-to-day or on rest protocols. OKC counters with Chet Holmgren, Nikola Topic, Ajay Mitchell, Thomas Sorber, and Jaylin Williams carrying similar tags. Translation: we're watching 15-to-20-man rotations featuring G League hopefuls and training-camp bodies who couldn't hit water from a boat.

Neither coaching staff is game-planning for points. They're evaluating depth, experimenting with lineups, and keeping stars wrapped in bubble wrap. Offensive continuity goes out the window when you're subbing five guys every four minutes. The result is choppy possessions, contested jumpers from players who won't make the final roster, and plenty of free throws to kill any semblance of pace.

DarkHorse likes the under 224.5 here, and it's hard to argue. These teams can fly when healthy, but tonight's cast isn't built for fireworks—it's built for film study and roster cuts.
