Welcome back to The Paddock Report, where we separate the contenders from the pretenders before puck drop even matters. The standings show nothing but zeroes, but the underlying numbers already tell us plenty about who's built to win and who's skating on hope.

Colorado sits atop our rankings with a plus-0.6 net rating that's the league's best. Their 3.0 offensive rating ties them with the elite scoring tier, but it's that 2.4 defensive rating—second-stingiest in the league—that makes them the complete package. The Avs aren't just talented; they're balanced, and that's what wins Cups.

Dallas deserves serious respect at 2.7 defensive rating, the league's absolute best, while posting a plus-0.3 net rating that screams "playoff team." Tampa's plus-0.2 with a 2.8 defensive mark makes them quietly dangerous. Don't sleep on the Lightning just because they're not making noise yet.

The biggest preseason disappointment? Vancouver's brutal minus-1.8 net rating, anchored by a league-worst 3.8 defensive rating. The Canucks are hemorrhaging expected goals before October even arrives. Chicago and Nashville share a concerning minus-1.3, both stuck at 2.0 offensive output with leaky 3.3 defensive numbers. That's basement-dwelling territory.

Toronto's minus-0.6 might not look catastrophic, but that 3.6 defensive rating is third-worst in the league. The Leafs can score—they're in that 3.0 offensive tier—but they'll give it right back. Same old story, different season.

For bettors, target Colorado and Dallas in early season unders. Fade Vancouver in every spot until they prove that defensive rating was a preseason mirage. And if you're looking for value, Washington's plus-0.1 with a 2.9 defensive rating suggests a team being overlooked in a crowded Metro.

The games haven't started, but the numbers don't lie. Bet accordingly.
