The defending champs roll into San Jose for opening night, and this one has all the makings of a statement game. Florida's coming off another deep playoff run with their core intact, while the Sharks are still firmly in rebuild mode after finishing basement-dwelling last season.

The Panthers bring that suffocating forecheck and Bobrovsky's playoff pedigree between the pipes. Their top-six forward group remains one of the league's most dangerous, and they've got the veteran savvy to put young, inexperienced teams away early. San Jose, meanwhile, is banking on internal development and hoping their prospects take meaningful steps forward. That's a nice long-term plan, but it doesn't win you many October games against Cup contenders.

The Sharks' goaltending situation remains a question mark, and their defensive corps lacks the kind of shutdown talent needed to contain Florida's speed and skill. Home ice might generate some early energy, but once the Panthers settle in and start cycling the puck, this could get ugly fast.

San Jose's going to have plenty of growing pains this season, and facing the champs right out of the gate isn't doing them any favors. Expect Florida to flex their muscles and send an early message to the rest of the league.
